Our Story
It’s May 2012. Boy is at swim practice. He looks across the pool and sees a strange new Girl staring right at him. Then he realizes, no — she’s staring at his best friend.
Girl begins to date Boy’s Best Friend. Boy and Girl become good buddies, too. Girl sets Boy up with many of her friends. “This will never be weird in hindsight” they all think.
When Girl and Boy’s Best Friend break up at the end of high school, Boy is protective and small-minded. Boy and Girl are enemies!
At least, that’s what Boy thinks. Turns out, the beef was one-sided. Girl and Boy’s Best Friend remain friends.
Fast-forward three years. It’s May 2018. Boy and Girl are in college. It’s a big school. They never see each other.
Girl has had a string of weird situationships. She frequents a bar that Boy’s Best Friend manages, lending an ear when Girl needs to complain about the men inhabiting Athens, GA.
Elsewhere on campus, Boy is very depressed. He doesn’t like a lot of the people he spends his time with. Lonely and adrift, he decides to spend the summer in Athens, intent on self-discovery.
Perusing Snapchat one evening, Boy sees Girl has posted a picture of a “Pickle Rick” King of Pops popsicle. Boy thinks this is kinda dumb and for some reason feels compelled to call her out on it. He responds to Girl’s story: sick!!!
Never one to roll over, Girl responds: nasty!!!.
Boy thinks this is funny. They spend the next few hours shooting the shit. They haven’t really spoken in years, and Boy has forgotten that he was once pretty close to Girl. They agree that if she finds herself in Athens that summer, they should catch up.
Four days later, Girl does find herself in Athens. She sends Boy a Snapchat of White Claws and Canes. Boy is caught hella off-guard. He didn’t actually mean they should catch up. That was just, like, a thing you say.
And yet. . . She is looking pretty good. . . What’s the worst that could happen?
Spoiler Alert:
